The history of the Nelstrop Family and St George’s Distillery James Nelstrop can remember, as a child on the family farm, his father questioning why all their barley had to go to Scotland to be turned onto whisky. This throwaway comment sowed the seed that became James’ lifetime ambition to open a whisky distillery in England. In 2005 after a successful career in agriculture that took James all over the world and saw him farming in England, Russia and Australia, he finally found himself in a position to build his dream. With a little help from the family building firm who did the construction work and Forsythes of Scotland who made the beautiful distillery equipment –the distillery became operational in September 2006. St Georges became the first registered single malt whisky distillery in England and the first whisky distillery to operate in England in over a century. Today the distillery exports its multi award winning single malt whisky to 14 countries worldwide, a little is even sneaked into Scotland.
